Il Comune di Besnate ha una superficie territoriale di 7,68 kmq. ed un’altitudine di 300 metri sul livello del mare. Nella sua massima elevazione, sulla collina del Ravellino, si raggiungono i 330 metri. Comprende le seguenti località: Besnate, Buzzano, Centenate. Ha, al 31 dicembre 2010, una popolazione di 5437 abitanti.
Besnate dista 40 km da Milano, 20 da Varese, 7 da Gallarate, 13 da Busto Arsizio e 7 da Somma Lombardo (Aeroporto di Malpensa).

Il territorio comunale ha importanti vie di comunicazione, prima fra tutte la linea ferroviaria Milano – Luino ed il tronco dell’autostrada dei Laghi A8 Milano – Varese, attualmente collegato con l’autostrada A26 per Alessandria Genova e Gravellona Toce.
Il territorio del Comune di Besnate è situato sulla fascia collinare delimitata ad occidente dalla valle del fiume Ticino, ad oriente dalla valle del torrente Arno; appartiene cioè a quell’ambito dell’alta e media pianura terrazzata della Provincia di Varese che, con altezza oscillante dai 200 ai 400 metri, va dal capoluogo fino a Lonate Pozzolo.

Dal punto paesaggistico Besnate può vantare una gran parte di territorio boschivo attraversato da sentieri percorribili, una vista speciale rivolta alle Alpi e, non da ultimo, importanti edifici storici che rimandano alle origini del Paese, come il Castello Visconteo, la Chiesa Santa Maria al Castello del XV secolo e la Chiesa dei SS. The has a land area of 7.68 sq km. and an altitude of 300 meters above sea level. At its highest elevation, on the hill of Ravellino, you can reach the 330 meters. It includes the following communities: Besnate, Buzzano and Centenate. It has, on 31 december of 2010, a population of 5437 inhabitants.

Besnate is distant almost 40 km from Milan, 20 km from Varese, 7 from Gallarate, 13 from Busto Arsizio and 7 from Somma Lombardo (Malpensa International Airport).

The district has important connections, first of all the railway line Milan – Luino and the highway “A8” Milan to Varese, currently connected by highway “A26” to Alessandria and Genova – Gravellona Toce.
The Municipality of Besnate is located on the hill surrounded by the valley of the Ticino River, and by the valley of the Arno River: that area belongs to the upper and middle terraced plains of the Province of Varese, with height oscillating between 200 and 400 meters, it goes from Varese to Lonate Pozzolo.

Concerning the landscape, Besnate has a large wooded area crossed by trails, a special view of the Alps and, not least, important historic buildings that recall the origins of the town, such as the Visconti Castle, the Church “Santa Maria al Castello” of the fifteenth century and the Church of SS. Nazari and Celso in Centenate.
